The Very First Post/The Darth Maul Game that Never Was
The Very First Post EVER!!!
~Hey ya'all, my name is Josh and welcome to my Den. Traditionally, a Den is where you go to relax, maybe watch a few movies, look at all your collectibles and chat with friends. The same goes for here, but with a decidedly nerdy/fanboy focus. Anything about comic books, movies, video games, books, tv shows, and whatever else I can think of is fair game for a posting. My beautiful fiance, Dancy, is of course at my side giving me ideas and criticism, and maybe I can even talk her into writing a post or two of her own.
The basic rules are as follows: Please read and share as much as possible, I will be doing infrequent posts but will try to do about 3-4 a week, Like most blogs, my popularity and thereby motivation to keep writing is based on my fan-base, which is based on you passing the word on too other people. So pass it on!!! I also encourage as many comments and discussions as possible, just no bashing or insulting. Any disrespectful behavior or posts will get posts deleted and people blocked. I'd rather not have to do that, so don't make me, okay? Okay!
And Now Presenting: The Darth Maul Game that Never Was!
~I'm a follower of a number of movie, fantasy and comic book pages on Facebook, including but not limited too the http://moviepilot.com series of pages. Earlier today I came across an article about something I hadn't previously known about, but I really wish would have happened. Turns out, back in 2010 (approx 11 years after "Star Wars: Episode 1") Lucasarts contracted Red Fly Studio (http://www.redflystudio.com/) to do a Darth Maul video game for PC, Xbox360, Wii, and PS3 entitled "Darth Maul: Battle of the Sith Lords". The initial production (as far as they got, anyways) was frustrating and full of confusion due to lack of communication from Lucasarts.
The story was originally an origin story for Darth Maul that would have started with him being around 9 years old and would have accumulated in his apparent death in SW1. Before settling on this story-line, Red Fly thought about continuing after SW1 under the assumption that Darth Maul didn't really die after being cut in two and tossed down a melting pit by a young Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Because of the previously mentioned lack of communication with Lucasarts and then the animated TV show "Clone Wars" getting the jump on the post-Phantom Menace story before Red Fly, they went back to the origin story.
After a much more confusion with Lucasarts, including other story edits and rewrites, Red Fly lost all communication with Lucasarts altogether until receiving an email telling them the project was being completely scrapped. This is typically attributed to Lucas being in negotiations with Disney at the time to sell Lucasarts, but really, nobody knows what actually happened to end the project.
But, there may be good news on the horizon. As of this month (October, 2015), Red Fly has announced plans to resurrect "Battle of the Sith Lords". The game is supposed to have "Batman: Arkham"-esque combat style, but according to Dan Borth of Red Fly they may not stay with the original Darth Maul story. Based on what feedback they get from Disney or Electronic Arts, they are prepared to reskin the old game to match the new "Force Awakens" universe, perhaps with Kylo Ren as the main protagonist or anti-hero.
Really quick, before I sign off on this post and release it into the great ether, I want to comment a bit on the Darth Maul video game. Most of my posts are going to be a combination of opinion and fact, and I will do my best to keep them clear and separate from the other.
Of the characters Star Wars has released into our lives and imaginations, I have a select 4 that I not only absolutely love, but also collect as much of their merchandise and paraphernalia as I can. With the announcement of "Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens" Kylo Ren was automatically put on my list with his antiquated Sith face-mask and cross-hilted lightsaber. Also on the list are the father and son pair, Jango and Boba Fett, rounded off, of course, by Darth Maul himself. As a collector of Darth Maul, I''ve seen and heard of a lot of the things released about him between his first appearance in 1999 and now. Of all the Star Wars characters, he is definitely the more unrecognized. Since "Episode 1" came into theaters, he has had only a handful of books and comics dedicated to him, not to mention the typical merchandising from the movie release.
All said and done, though, there have been more books and stories written about Boba Fett or even Jar Jar Binks than there have Darth Maul. And when it comes to video games and visual media, he has had one TV appearance in "Clone Wars" and that was pretty much it. Sega Dreamcast's gaming console had him as a side-character in a couple of their games, as did a number of the consoles at the time. In more recent times, only Battlefront II has had an actual playable Darth Maul character. Meanwhile, secondary characters like Kyle Katarn from the Expanded Universe (The Jedi Knight series) and less interesting characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars: Obi-Wan) all have gotten video games dedicated to them,
I strongly think it is time for Darth Maul to get the series-recognized showcasing his richly deserves. Without hesitation I and a number of other Star Wars fans would buy a Darth Maul game. And if we didnt have the console to play it, we would go out and buy that too.
So, Dan Borth, if you or any of your Red Fly buddies are listening, go ahead with Darth Maul, do him and us proud!
